Biographical Sketch
These materials were used by Professor Charles F. Kegley in the writing of his doctoral dissertation and were accessioned on January 9, 1974 by the Kent State University Archives.
Soon after the shootings of May 4, 1970, at the request of President Robert I. White, Professor Kegley became the chairman of the University Commission to Implement a Commitment to Non-Violence Officially on May 21, 1970, the commission was charged to
, "...recommend methods and procedures to implement a commitment to nonviolence at KSU." The commission membership totalled fifty-two with twenty students, twenty faculty, ten administrators or staff personnel and two representatives from the
community. It met a total of thirty times during the summer; the last meeting was September 16, 1970.
In addition, numerous task force meetings took place prior to each commission meeting. There were nine task forces: ROTC, Peace Keeping, Student-Faculty Justice, Black Student Concerns, Political Action, Communications, Campus Security, Student Contact,
and University Governance. All recommendations made by the commission ultimately came from these task force meetings. Approximately thirty recommendations, or sets of recommendations, were made during the summer. Many were accepted by the university
administration; some were modified, and a few were rejected. Some of the areas considered were ROTC visibility, selection of a new student ombudsman, twenty-four hour desk operation in all dorms, an emergency communications system, high priority for black
student concerns, a new identification card system, and extending full voting privileges to undergraduate students.
Scope and Content
The core of this collection is made up of correspondence, meeting minutes, and recommendations from the commission. The correspondence of most individual task forces are provided in separate files; however most task force material is included in the body
of the recommendations and meeting minutes.
A variety of faculty senate and student government related materials are also provided. Some other file items include newspaper clippings, reports, questionnaires, proposals, and ROTC discussions.
The Commission on Nonviolence (or Kegley Commission as it is sometimes called) should not be confused with the Commission on KSU Violence. For information on the latter, see Boxes 105 and 106, May 4 Collection.
