Historical Note

Massive student demonstrations and protests nationwide followed the shootings at Kent State University and at Jackson State College in the Spring of 1970. As many citizens of the American public were siding with the National Guard in the weeks following May 4, the student reaction became increasingly stronger and ultimately led in the closings of many colleges and universities from coast to coast during May and June. Countless campus assemblies toward strike resulted in flyers, newsletters and letters reflecting the conditions and sentiments of a portion of the American student body at this time (as well as some faculty members and administration).

Scope and Content

This collection includes newsletters and flyers from colleges and universities in the United States. The materials are reflective of particular student bodies, faculty involvement, and also statements from the administrative offices. Box 14 includes responses from universities and libraries for strike papers as requested by Kent State University Libraries, which wished to establish this collection of nationwide strike papers. Materials are arranged by state and then by specific institution.
