Biographical Sketch

Dr. Jerry M. Lewis (1937- ), now a professor emeritus, has been a sociology professor at Kent State University since 1966. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Cornell College, his master's degree from Boston University, and his doctoral degree from the University of Illinois (1970). Dr. Lewis was a witness to the shootings of May 4th, 1970, and he has since been involved in researching, memorializing, and lecturing about this tragic event. He has been interviewed numerous times by the local and national media about the shootings. A resident of Kent, Dr. Lewis was appointed to the Kent city council in January of 1991.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains the papers of Jerry M. Lewis relating to campus unrest in general, and the events of May 4, 1970, in particular. Professor Lewis has been a member of the Kent State University faculty since 1966, and he has been active in researching and commemorating the events of May 4, 1970.

Portions of the papers have been microfilmed (LD4191.O72 K351X, reel number 6, frames 367-790). The present arrangement of the materials was performed by John R. Brunswick, March 1991. This inventory supersedes the previous inventory. See the separation lists attached for any materials deaccessioned from the collection.

The Jerry M. Lewis Papers are arranged in four series: subject files, scholarly works, general clippings, and personal papers.

The subject files series (Boxes 19, 19A and 20) contains, for the most part, primary source materials, though there are some secondary source materials mixed in. Subjects include from student unrest, Black United Students, faculty response to the events of May 4, Tent City, commemorations, SDS, the May 4 Memorial, and administrative response.

The scholarly works series (Box 20A) contains various papers and publications by Professor Lewis and others, including colleagues and students. There are also bibliographies and book and drama reviews.

The clippings series (Box 20B) contains newspaper and periodical articles, filed by the name of the publication. The clippings are from the Akron Beacon Journal, the Kent-Ravenna Record-Courier, The Nation, Newsweek, and many other publications.

Lewis's personal papers (Box 20C) include correspondence (of both a more personal and press/media-related nature), information on his appearances in various media venues, a brief diary from the 1994/95 school year, and student papers and projects relating to May 4. Some of the papers are from classes he taught, but some are from students from other schools who visited Kent State University or just chose to study the Kent State shootings.

Note: oversized posters are kept in the horizontal file.
