The Center for Peaceful Change (CPC) was created in 1971, as a living memorial to May 4, 1970. The center, initially, was an independent unit that housed the school's peace studies program (or integrative change, as it was known then) with a focus on study, research, and public service. It's May 4 committee sponsored the annual candlelight vigil, as well as other May 4 activities, for the first few years.
The Center, now known as The Center for Applied Conflict Management (CACM), changed its name in 1994. It houses the university's conflict studies program and is attached to the department of political science. The Center can be found on the web at: http://www.kent.edu/cacm/.
This collection includes papers donated to the collection by the Center for Peaceful Change. Included in the collection are flyers, photocopies of newspaper articles, schedules, programs, and other papers relating to Memorial activities. A great many songs and poems are included, as well as the Lectureship in Peaceful Change speeches of George Wald, Norman Cousins, and Peter Davies. Of particular interest is the correspondence, which includes notes from the parents of Jeffrey Miller, Allison Krause, and William Schroeder. The majority of the correspondence is to or from Michelle Klein and Amy Shaw, the 1974 and 1975 Committee Chairwomen. One other interesting piece in this collection is Allison Krause's residence hall form.
