Biographical Note

Raymond M. Clark was appointed by the Board of Trustees in 1943 to serve as Acting President after the dismissal of Karl Clayton Leebrick until a successor was named. At the time of his appointment, Clark was a faculty member in the Psychology and Education departments. Clark prepared for the student population boom that was going to occur at the end of the Second World War following the passage of the GI Bill in the United States Legislature, which gave soldiers tuition benefits. After George Bowman was selected as president, Clark was appointed to lead graduate school instruction. In 1950, he became Dean of the Graduate School.

Scope and Content


Very few papers of the early presidents of Kent State survive today. The papers in this collection were found in the George A. Bowman, Papers, 1901-1976 and removed for better access to Leebrick's materials. The bulk of the material contains correspondence with several United States War Departments. Kent Sate materials include committee lists, inter-departmental correspondence, and faculty meeting minutes.
