Abstract: Dr. Richard Madey is a professor emeritus of physics
at Kent State University. This collection of materials, dating from 1963 to
2000, contains primarily collaboration meeting reports, laboratory notebooks,
logbooks, NASA reports, research papers, periodicals, and theses. All of these
materials pertain to the study of physics.
Biography: Dr. Richard Madey was born in Brooklyn, NY, on
February 23, 1922. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1944 to
1946. Madey earned a bachelor of electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute (Troy, NY) in 1942 and a Ph.D. in physics from University of California
at Berkeley in 1952. He worked at as professor of physics (1971-1989), chair
of the Department of Physics (1971-1983), director of the Center for Nuclear
Research (1988-1992), university professor (1989-1992), and research scientist
and emeritus university professor (1992-present). His primary fields of research
are nuclear physics and gaseous absorption. One of his most significant and
recent research projects involved probing the cahrege structure of the neutron.
Madey has received many honors and distinctions throughout his career, including
the Meritorious Service Award from the New York Metropolitan Section, American
Nuclear Society and the Presidents Medal from Kent State University. He
has been named a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Chemists, the New
York Academy of Sciences, and the Ohio Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he
is an honorary lifetime member of the American Nuclear Society. He remains an
active researcher in the field of physics.
Scope and Content: The Richard Madey papers contain laboratory
notebooks and logbooks from experiments that he or his students performed, reports
from collaboration meetings which he co-wrote, NASA reports for which he was
the principal investigator, research papers, periodicals, theses, and correspondence.
Statement of Arrangement: The Richard Madey papers are arranged
alphabetically by series, then chronologically by date. The collection contains
the following series:
Preferred Citation: Richard Madey papers. Department of Special
Collections and Archives. Kent State University Libraries and Media Services.
Acquisition Information: The Richard Madey papers were transferred
to Special Collections and Archives by Kent State University Department of Physics
in July 2007.
