Biographical Sketch
Saroj D. Sutaria was born December 10, 1930 in India. She received a B.A. from Nagpur University
(Nagpur, India) in 1952, a M.A. in Sociology from Bombay University in 1954, a M.S. in Special
Education from Syracuse University, and an Ed.D. in Special Education from Syracuse University in 1968.
In addition, she received a diploma in teaching mentally retarded children from the Society for the Care,
Treatment, and Training of Children in Need of Special Care in Bombay, India in 1956.
From September 1967 to May 1992, Dr. Sutaria was a full time faculty member at Kent State University in the Department of Teacher Development and Curriculum Studies, College of
Education, specializing in the field of Specific Learning Disabilities. Besides numerous
journal publications, her text Specific Learning Disabilities: Nature and Needs was
published in 1985.
Dr. Sutaria was very active at Kent State, participating in numerous committees, councils, and
program events at the Departmental, College, and University levels. Dr. Sutaria was also very
active professionally. She was a presenter and participant in numerous national and international
conferences including the Council for Learning Disabilities, the 9th and 11th World Congresses of
Reading, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Sutaria had numerous professional
affiliations including Phi Delta Kappa and Ohio Danforth Associates. Among her many honors,
she was featured in Who's Who in the Midwest (15th and 17th editions), and Leaders in Education
(4th edition). She received a Service Award from the KSU chapter of Phi Delta Kappa in April
1989 and in 1992 received a Service Pin from them as well.
Scope and Content
The Sutaria papers were donated by Dr. Sutaria in August 2001. The first 2 boxes contain the
bulk of her written documents. These are separated by major categories following Dr. Sutaria's
own original order. These categories are: Publications; Critiques and Position Papers; Professional
Involvement; and Course-Related Materials. The final eight folders in Box 2 contain over 300
slip-cased slides from various Summer Programs Dr. Sutaria conducted. Box 3 contains 3 photo albums,
and over 20 audio cassettes. Also included is a shrink-wrapped copy of Specific Learning
Disabilities: Nature and Needs. Box 4 contains a galley of Specific Learning Disabilities:
Nature and Needs containing editing markings.
