Scope and Content

Through the efforts of David Grey and Patricia Burnett, Ohio Labor History Project, and Salvatore Pate, President of Local 164, National Letter Carriers (NALC) , these rcords arrived on July 24, 1980, at the University Archives, Kent State University.

The NALC, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., represents the mail carriers of the United States Postal Service and is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor / Congress of Labor Organizations. Local 164, or Branch 164, operates in Steubenville, Ohio, and several of the surrounding small towns.

An important part of this collection consists of grievance materials, arranged alphabetically by the grievant's last name. The rest of the materials, including minutes of Branch meetings, working agreements, correspondence, and convention materials, are arranged chronologically within their respective categories.

This collection, studied in conjunction with the records of Branch 385 of Youngstown, Ohio, or other labor unions in the Steubenville area, such as Local 438 of the brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers, would be of value primarily to researchers interested in the NALC itself, or labor affairs in Steubenville.
