Scope and Content
Through the efforts of Burton Barnard and Patricia Burnett of the Ohio Labor History Project, and Reno DePietro, President, Local Union 1307, United Steelworkers of America, these records arrived on October 19, 1979, and May 23, 1980, at the American History Research Center, Kent State University.
Chartered on May 22, 1942, Local 1307 is a steelworkers union associated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (A. F. L. - C. I. O.). Its membership presently numbers around 1300 and the members are employed at the United States Steel Corporation in McDonald, Ohio. In 1980 the company sought to close the plant.
The records in this collection span the years 1943 to 1980, but the bulk of the material relates to the 1950's and the 1970's. Among the types of material contained within this collection are financial records, minutes, bylaws, correspondence, contract agreements , fringe benefit information, and various publications. The financial records and part of the minutes consist of oversized bound volumes and are in the shelf area reserved for such material. The unbound material is arranged according to type of record and then chronologically within each of these major categories. The one photograph in this collection has been transferred to the audio-visual (av) file. Also, the collection includes a number of signatures of notable politicians. These letters have been removed from the collection and photo copies inserted in their respective places. The originals have been transferred to the autograph file. Three book-length publications, George Kelly and Edwin H. Beachler, Man of Steel, The Story of David J. McDonald (New York: North American Book Co., 1954); and, United Labor of Ohio, The Record of Robert Alphonso Taft (n.p., n.d.), in both bound and loose-leaf form, have been removed to the area reserved for published holdings. The bound volumes, the photograph, the autographs and the three publications can be requested under collection number B.8.8.1.
This collection will prove useful to the researchers interested in the concerns of union members at the local level. It also helps document the reaction of Local 1307 to the Steel Strike of 1952 as well as to the record of United States Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. In addition, the researcher should consult related holdings in the Archives such as the records of Local Unions 1375, 1617 and 2243 of the United Steelworkers of America. They are especially pertinent since all three are located in the Mahoning Valley area of Ohio.
