Scope and Content

Through the efforts of Patricia Burnett of the Ohio Labor History Project and Milton Cross, President, Local Union 1375, United Steelworkers of America, these records arrived on May 23, 1980, at the American History Research Center, Kent State University.

Local 1375 is a steelworkers union associated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (A. F. L.-C. I. O.). Although the majority of the members of Local 1375 have been employed at the Republic Steel Corporation in Warren, Ohio, others work for either the Koppers Company or the Warren Slag Corporation which are also located in Warren.

The records in this collection span the years 1938 to 1973, although the bulk of the material relates to the 1950's and the 1960's. Among the type of material contained within this collection are bylaws, correspondence, minutes, special in-mill union meeting minutes, contract agreements, complaints and grievances, and arbitration hearings and decisions. There is little by way of financial records. The records have been kept in topical categories and then arranged chronologically.

This collection will prove especially useful to researchers interested in grievance and arbitration matters between labor and management. It also helps to document the reaction of a local to the steelworker strikes in 1952, 1955, and 1959.
