Biographical Note

James Russell Lowell was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932. He graduated from Western Reserve University and became a connoisseur of American, British and Canadian literature. In 1963, Lowell established The Asphodel Book Shop. Located originally in downtown Cleveland's Old Arcade, Asphodel specialized in first-edition, small-press publications (namely but not exclusively dealing with poetry) that reflected the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Lowell and his wife Tessa eventually settled in Auburn Corners, Ohio, where Asphodel continued to promote rare literary works, and Lowell himself remained an authority in the field up to his death on January 4, 2004. The Department of Special Collections and Archives acquired the Lowell papers in 2004.

Scope and Content

The Lowell Papers span the years 1952-2004. They contain letters, poems, manuscripts, broadsides, holiday and greeting cards, and photographs. Correspondence forms the bulk of the collection and includes letters from Tom Kryss, Kent Taylor, Bill Shields, David Federman, Ron Caplan, Richard Blevins, and J. C. C. Mays. The collection was processed at the item level.
