Biographical Sketch

Carol Bergé, born in New York City in 1928, is a gifted author who finds poetry and prose to be equally engaging and challenging. Among her literary influences are Leo Tolstoy, D.H. Lawrence, Charles Olson, Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), and Shirley Jackson. Some of Bergé's poetical works include The Vulnerable Island (Renegade Press, 1964), Poems Made of Skin (Weed/Flower Press, 1968), and From a Soft Angle: Poems About Women (Bobbs-Merrill, 1971); her prose works include The Vancouver Report (Vector Press, 1964) and Acts of Love: An American Novel (Bobbs-Merrill, 1973). In addition, she has contributed to numerous anthologies and literary periodicals, including Iowa Review, Small Press Review, and Village Voice. The recipient of numerous literary awards, Bergé has also taught at several universities and has given readings all over the United States and in Mexico.

Scope and Content

The Carol Bergé Papers consist of letters to Bergé from Cid Corman (17), Robert Creeley (1), Edward Dahlberg (2), Denise Levertov Goodman (10), Mitchell Goodman (1), Robert Kelly (7), and Gael Turnbull (2). Carbon copies of 42 replies to these correspondents from Bergé are included. A copy of a letter from Charles Hanna to Cid Corman is also included. The letters are organized chronologically.
