Biographical Information

Richard Lowell Blevins was born June 27, 1950, in Wadsworth, Ohio. He was married to JoAnn Armbruster in September of 1972. His son, Douglas, was born in May 1981. Blevins received his Bachelor of General Studies from Kent State University in 1973, his M.A. in English literature, from the University of Oregon in 1976, and his Ph.D. in English literature, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985.

Blevins has been a teacher since the 1976-77 school year, when he was a substitute teacher at the Eugene [Oregon] Montessori School. He began teaching college English in 1977-78, as a part-time instructor at the University of Akron. He was a part-time lecturer at Kent State University in 1978. He has been a member of the English faculty at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg since 1978, and has been an associate professor of English there since 1986. The University of Pittsburgh has given him two awards for his work: the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1994 and the Sigma Tau Delta Humanities Award in 1991.

Blevins has published extensively. His significant and/or book length works of poetry include: Longplaying (1994), Three Sleeps (1992, Igneus Books; 1982 Zelot Press), The Morrison Poem (1992), Clarel's Motel (1987), Letters from Kansas (1986), Hers How (1986), Arrowhead (1985), Taz Alago (1984), Remembering the Future (1981), Court of Half-King (1980). He has had esays and poetry published in many journals, including Credences, Poetry Review (London), Sagetrieb, RE:AL, Redneck Review of Literature, Talisman, Melville Society Extracts, American Letters and Commentary, and Poetics Journal.

From 1981 to 1988, Blevins ran Zelot Press/Clarel Editions with Bill Shields. Blevins and Shields started this press as a means to publish literature which wasn't being accepted by other presses. The press's name, Zelot, makes fun of the religious fervor of poets and the "closed Room" which keeps many authors from getting their work published. Over the course of the press's existence, Blevins and Shields published and edited some 60 chapbooks, pamphlets, boradsides, and periodicals The Zelot (1981-82) and It Doesn't Matter (1986-87).

Blevins took over the Charles Olson-Robert Creeley Letters series from its original editor George Butterick. Blevins has competed Volume 10 of the 15 volume set. The series is published through Black Sparrow Press. Also, Blevins edited George F. Butterick's Collected Early Poems (Suny-Buffalo).

Scope and Content:

Richard Blevins donated this collection of correspondences, manuscripts, journals, and notes beginning in May 1994 and continues to send more. It contains materials spanning the years 1970 to current.

The collection contains an extensive grouping of correspondences written to Blevins from various poets, professionals, and publishers. Persons associated with the contemporary poetry and literature are especially reporesented, notably Edward Abbey, Helen Adam, George Butterick, and Joel Oppenheimer. Correspondence from several of Blevins' friends include Ken Irby, John Moritz of Tansy Press, Peter Kidd of Igneus Press, and Basil and Martha King.

The collection also includes Blevins' personal journals from 1972 to 1997. The three earliest of these journals were written during Blevins's years as an undergraduate at Kent State University, and contain many writings related to his work here. Of particular interest, Blevins was a student of both Robert Duncan and Edward Dorn during 1972-1973, when they were visiting Kent State University. In addition to their presences in his journals and course notes, these poets are represented in this collection by personal letters, unpublished poems, posters, and broadsides. Duncan and Dorn-related material represents both their year at Kent State University and later connections to Blevins.

Blevins was a student at Kent State during 1970, when the May 4 Shootings took place. This event is represented most explicitly in the included issues of the Kent State University literary magazine, "The Human Issue," in Blevins' poetry, and in the 1974 chapbook Four on Four, published in memory of the event.

The collections contains notes, research, and correspondence used in Blevins' unpublished dissertation, "Henry (Will Henry) Allen's Uses of History in From Where the Sun Now Stands, A Novel of the American West."

Throughout the collection, in correspondence, manuscripts, and other notes, there is material related to the Black Mountain Poets. Prominent are the manuscripts for the notes of Volume 9 and 10 of the Olson-Creeley Collected Letters. Also representative of the Black Mountain artists are the extensive correspondence, writings, and drawings of Basil King.

This collection also contains copies and manuscripts of many works published by Blevins and Shields's Zelot Press. Contributing authors include Blevins, Shields, George Butterick, Fielding Dawson, Ken Irby, Basil King, Martha King, George Oppenheimer, and Douglas Woolf.

The collection also includes the 1975 edition of Spawn Press, which includes Robert Smithson's Partially Buried Woodshed: A Spawn Press Supplement. This supplement is a collection of works in response to the 1975 razing of Smithson's sculpture.

Finally, several smaller presses are represented in the collection, notably broadsides and correspondence from The Alternative Press, Igneus Press, and Tansy Press. Some of these broadsides are signed by the authors.
