Abstract: This collection documents Richard Blevins' work as a poet, student, teacher, author, editor and publisher from the early 1970s to 2004. It includes Blevins' own journals, poetry, research and scholarly writings, as well as his extensive correspondence with fellow-poets and friends. The collection includes manuscripts submitted to the Zelot Press (1981-1988), a small press founded by Blevins and partner, Bill Shields. Blevins was strongly influenced by the Black Mountain poets and this is reflected in the contents of the collection which include writings both about and by a number of members of this school, including Ed Dorn, Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley and Joel Oppenheimer.
Biography of Richard Blevins: Richard Lowell Blevins was born June 27, 1950, in Wadsworth, Ohio. He attended Kent State University and was there at the time of the May 4th, 1970 shootings. Blevins was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and several of his published pieces would later reflect on the events of May 4th. While at KSU, Blevins studied with Black Mountain poets Robert Duncan
and Edward Dorn. Both Duncan and Dorn had a profound impact on Blevins development as a scholar and a writer. Blevins was graduated from KSU in 1973 with a degree in General Studies. He married Joann Armbruster in 1972. He received his M.A. in English literature from the University of
Oregon in 1976, and his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of
Pittsburgh in 1985.
Blevins began his teaching career as a substitute teacher at the Eugene [Oregon] Montessori School in 1976. He taught briefly at the University of Akron (1977-1978) and at Kent State University (1978). In 1978 Blevins joined the English faculty at the University of Pittsburgh at
Greensburg, and has been an associate professor of English there
since 1986. The University of Pittsburgh has given him several awards for his work including the Distinguished Teaching Award (1990), the Sigma Tau Delta Humanities
Award (1991) and the Chancellor's Award (1999). He held the Humanities chair from 1999 to 2008.
Blevins' published works of poetry include Arrowhead (1985), Breathing Bolano (2009) Captivity Narratives (2008), Castle Tubin (2006) Clarel's
Motel (1987), The Collected Later Poems Of Philip Marlowe (1999), Court of Half-King (1980), Fogbow Bridge (2000), Hers How (1986), Letters from Kansas (1986), Longplaying (1994), The Morrison Poem (1992), Remembering the Future (1981), Taz Alago (1984), and Three Sleeps (1982; 1992). His essays and poetry have been
published in many journals including Credences, Poetry Review (London), Sagetrieb, RE:AL, Redneck Review of Literature, Talisman, Melville Society
Extracts, American Letters and Commentary, and Poetics Journal. Blevins' scholarly writing and editing includes volumes 9 and 10 of Charles Olson and Robert Creeley: The Complete Correspondence (1990; 1996); The Collected Poems of George F. Butterick (1988) and numerous entries in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, the Encyclopedia of American Literature, the Encyclopedia of World Literature and The Ezra Pound Encyclopedia.
Between 1981 and 1988, Blevins and partner, Bill
Shields, served as co-editors and publishers of the Zelot Press. Blevins and Shields started this small poetry press as a means to publish
literature which was not being accepted by other presses. The press' name,
Zelot, makes fun of the religious fervor of poets and the "closed room"
which keeps many authors from getting their work published. During this period Blevins and Shields edited and published some 60
chapbooks, pamphlets and broadsides, and the periodicals, The Zelot (1981-1982)
and It Doesn't Matter (1986-1987).
Blevins currently teaches at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and he is married to author Martha J. Koehler.
Scope and Content: The Richard Blevins papers span from the early 1950s to 2006, with the bulk of the material in the collection documenting both Blevins' writing and academic career beginning in the early 1970s. Blevins' work as poet, student, scholar and teacher are all reflected in this collection.
The collection includes Blevins' personal journals and writings dating from 1972 to 2003.
The three earliest of these journals were written during Blevins' years as an
undergraduate at Kent State University. Blevins studied with Black Mountain poets Robert Duncan
and Edward Dorn during 1972-1973, and their presence is reflected in this collection through journals and course notes, personal letters, unpublished poems,
posters, and broadsides. Blevins was a student at Kent State University when the May 4th, 1970
shootings took place. This collection contains issues of KSU's literary magazine, The Human Issue, and the poetry book Four on Four (1974), both of which reflect on this event.
The collection contains correspondence to
Blevins from various poets, professionals, and publishers. Persons associated
with contemporary poetry and literature, especially the Black Mountain poets, are represented including Edward Abbey, Helen Adam, George Butterick, Robert Creeley and Joel Oppenheimer.
Extensive correspondence from Blevins' friends includes Robert Bertholf, Steve Ellis, Jed Hickson, Ken Irby, Peter Kidd (Igneus Press), Basil and Martha King, and John Moritz (Tansy Press).
The collection also contains drafts, manuscripts and research reflective of Blevins extensive writing, both poetic and academic. Drafts of many of Blevins' poems and books of poetry are included in this collection. Academic writings include research used in Blevins' unpublished dissertation, Henry (Will Henry) Allen's Uses of
History in "From Where the Sun Now Stands", A Novel of the American West and volumes 9 and 10 of Charles Olson and Robert Creeley: The Complete Correspondence. Publications, correspondence and manuscripts related to Blevins' and Bill Shields work as publishers of the Zelot Press (1981-1988) is present, with contributing authors including Blevins,
Shields, George Butterick, Fielding Dawson, Ken Irby, Basil and Martha King,
Joel Oppenheimer, and Douglas Woolf. Finally, several smaller presses are represented in the collection, notably
broadsides and correspondence from The Alternative Press, Igneus Press, and
Tansy Press.
