Biographical Note
Hazel Collister Hutchison (1893-1977)
Born in 1893 in Cleveland, Ohio, Hazel Collister Hutchison (who used the pen
name "Collister Hutchison") was a poet, teacher, and professional handwriting
analyst. She attended the Cleveland Normal School for two years, followed by
two years at Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University)
where she earned a B.A. She also spent a year in France studying French history
and art history at the Sorbonne. Hutchison was a public schoolteacher in Cleveland
for 46 years and also taught at the Murray Hill School in Little Italy from
1936-60.
Hutchison's poems were published in major magaizines of her day including Poetry,
the American Scholar, and The Atlantic. Her best-known work
is Toward Daybreak (Harper, 1950) for which she received critical acclaim.
She also published a book of poetry called Seven Christmas Poems.
Clark C. Livensparger
Clark C. Livensparger was born in Newark, Ohio, and moved to Akron, Ohio, when
he was twelve. He received a B.A. from the University of Akron. In 1945 he moved
to Cleveland and worked as a bridge leverman for the B & O Railroad. He
also taught English and short-story writing for Western Reserve University.
In 1951 he became a lexicographer and associate editor for Webster's New
World Dictonaries at the World Publishing Company in Cleveland. Livensparger
knew Hazel Collister Hutchison for many years and was one of her literary executors.
Scope and Content
This collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspapers clippings,
articles, manuscripts, and other miscellaneous documents by and about Hazel
Collister Hutchison and Clark C. Livensparger.
