Biographical Sketch

Lawrence Lee (1903-1978), born in Gadsden, Alabama, was a poet known for his subdued, lyrical style, as well as his poetic treatment of the life of Thomas Jefferson in Monticello and Other Poems (1937) and The Tomb of Thomas Jefferson and Other Poems (1940). Lee was editor of Virginia Quarterly Review from 1938-42, and contributed to numerous other publications, such as Sewanee Review, New York Herald-Tribune, New York Times, Harper's, Atlantic Monthly, Scribner's Magazine, Forum, Life and Letters, and The Classical World. He was an instructor in English, French and later in literature at various universities. He spent the largest part of his teaching career at the University of Pittsburgh, from which he retired in 1973.

Scope and Content

This collection contains typed poems by Lee, all of which are signed by the author, and most of which are copies, not original typescripts.
