Biographical Note
Poet and author Paul Zimmer was born in Canton, Ohio in 1934. After attending
Kent State University until 1959, he worked as a news reporter for the United
States Army from 1954-1955 and covered atomic bomb tests in Nevada. In 1967,
Zimmer began his publishing career with the University of Pittsburgh Press,
and his first book, The Ribs of Death, was published. For this accomplishment
he received Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree from Kent State University
in 1968. Over the years, Paul Zimmer has served as director of a number of university
presses across the nation and has published many works himself. Professional
highlights in his career include his refusal to accept a grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts because he felt 1st Amendment rights in the United States
Constitution were violated in the publishing profession; this received national
attention, and as a result Zimmer won the Open Book Award from the American
Society of Journalists and Authors for his stance. Other important milestones
were receiving an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and
Letters, being selected for the National Poetry Series, and receiving a Distinguished
Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University
in 2004. Zimmer's major works include A Seed in the Wind (1960), The
Ribs of Death (1967), The Republic of Many Voices (1969), The
Zimmer Poems (1976), With Wanda: Town and Country Poems (1980),
Family Reunion: Selected and New Poems (1983), The Great Bird of Love
(1989), Big Blue Train (1993), Crossing Into Sunlight (1996),
After the Fire (2002), Trains in the Distance (2004).

artwork, and photographs that outline the professional career and personal life
of Paul Zimmer. This material was compiled in a series of three-ring binders
that served as writing notebooks for the poet. Materials have been removed from
the notebooks for preservation purposes and arranged chronologically to maintain
the original order of the materials as they were donated to the Department.
Series 1, contained in Boxes 1-5, includes poems, correspondence, and articles
from Paul Zimmer's writing notebooks. Series 2 and 3, starting in Box 5 and
concluding in Box 6, consist of artwork and photographs that were separated
from the notebooks for preservation purposes. Series 4 (Box 7) includes oversized
items such as posters, news clippings, and announcements.
Please note that literary rights associated with these papers are retained
by the author.
