Historical Note
Philip McCord Morse's genealogical study of his family, Your Ancestors
includes a summary of the life of Morse's great-grandfather, William B. McCord
(1844-1908). According to this source, McCord served in the Civil War in the the
179th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865) and started the Salem Daily News,
the first daily newspaper in Salem, Ohio in 1891. In 1901 and 1905 he was elected
to the Ohio Legislature as Representative for Columbiana County.
Scope and Content
William B. McCord's journals give his own account of the years 1868-1871, covering
his church activities, courtship with Helen Lydia Guisse of Wellsville, Ohio and
his work in the newspaper business.
