Biographical Note
Lysander W. Tulleys was born in Frankfort, Ohio, in 1835 and was educated in
Ross County. He attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, from approximately
1854-58 and went on to Union College in Schenectady, New York, from approximately
1858-1860. It was here that he obtained the degree of A.B. in classics in the
year of 1860. (Three years later, he was awarded an A.M. degree while active
in the war.) When the Civil War broke out, Tulleys was a principal at the Yellow
Springs High School.
He began his military career in April, 1861 as a high private while in Company
F of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. From this 90-day service, he proceeded
to be mustered out into the position of first Sergeant in July 1861. In the
fall of 1861, he had advanced to captain and placed in Company D, one of the
44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On October 31, 1863, he was mustered out to accept
the promotion of lieutenant colonel of the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Tulleys
ended his service in 1864, being honorably discharged.
While in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Tulleys took part in the action at Bull Run. During his enlistment in the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was involved in the Battle of Lewisburg: the assemblage of rebel delegates attempting to take Kentucky out of the union; the battle at Knoxville; and, the fighting at Strawberry Plains, among others. These battles took Tulleys and his men across the northeastern states.
Descriptions of his war experiences can be found in varying lengths through
the following sources in the collection: autobiography of L. W. Tulleys (folder
1); brief history (folder 4); interpretation of Tulleys' journal while enlisted
(folder 10).
When Tulleys returned to civilian life, he obtained a law degree and started
a practice in Xenia, Ohio. Also in Xenia, he met and married Sarah E. Gowdy.
He eventually moved to Champaign, Illinois, and was involved in both law and
providing farm loans. In 1874, he moved his business to Iowa. It was at this
time Tulleys gave up the legal business and concentrated on farm loans and eventually
added real estate in 1897. During these years of practicing varied business
interests, Tulleys stressed both honesty and integrity as mainstays in his interactions
with others. He remained in Iowa until his death in 1928.
Scope and Content
The materials in this collection were donated to the Kent State University Department of Special Collections and Archives by the Harm family, grandchildren of Lysander W. Tulleys, in June, 1993.
The materials concerned pertain to the period of time Tulleys was enlisted
in the Civil War, mainly in the Company of the 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry,
from approximately 1861-1864.
Along with written accounts of Tulleys' war encounters, other war items include
the following: company fund account items in the form of invoices and receipts;
special orders from superiors; profiles (war plans); muster out rolls; and,
correspondence. There is also a brief genealogy of the Tulleys and Coyner families,
along with two photographs of Tulleys.
The collection is arranged by subject and within each subject, the items are
arranged by date. Folders 18, 19, 24, 28, 32, 37-42, and 47 are oversized and
are located in the map file cabinet on the 11th floor.
