Biographical Note
Susan Yankowitz was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1941. She graduated from
Sarah Lawrence College and the Yale School of Drama. During the 1960s, Yankowitz
began her professional career as a member of Joseph Chaikin's Open Theater group,
where she authored Terminal , a groundbreaking collaborative play about
human mortality. Following the Open Theater, Yankowitz went on to form
her own distinctive voice by writing richly symbolic, socially-conscious works
that include Night Sky , A Knife in the Heart , Slain
in the Spirit , and Phaedra in Delirium , as well as demonstrating
her versatility with Cheri , an opera, and True Romances , a
musical collaboration with Elmer Bernstein. Yankowitz also has published Silent
Witness , an acclaimed novel, and wrote Prison Game , a
play for television.
Scope and Content
The Susan Yankowitz Papers contain manuscripts, in multiple drafts and versions,
of Yankowitz's plays and other works. The manuscripts are arranged alphabetically
by title. Accompanying these manuscripts are correspondence files, production
files, research notes, photographs, and other materials related to each work.
Additionally, there is a large series of correspondence, both personal and professional
in nature, arranged alphabetically by the name of the correspondent. Other miscellaneous
materials include essays by and about Yankowitz, audio-visual materials, artifacts,
and biographical information. Materials in the collection date from the early
1960s through the present time and are organized into series, listed below.
