Biographical Summary
Jerry Silverman (1910-1984), a lawyer and businessman, and Shannon Rodgers
(1911-1996), a designer, were founders and partners in Jerry Silverman,
Inc., one of the fashion industry's most successful New York women's ready-to-wear
firms of the second half of the 20th century. Privately Rodgers, a
native Ohioan, also amassed one of the most important collections of
historic, designer and ethnic costume in the United States. In exchange for
donating their $5 million collection of costumes and decorative arts to Kent
State University in the early 1980s, the University agreed to create the KSU
Museum in order to house and provide educational access to the collection and
the Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising
to serve as a center for fashion design and merchandising education in the midwest.
Extended Biography
Shannon Rodgers (1911-1996) and Jerry Silverman (1910-1984)
Shannon Rodgers was born on August 3, 1911 in Newcomerstown, Ohio. He begin
his career in New York City as a set designer for Bergman studios and soon began
working in costume design as well. After catching the eye of film director Cecil
B. DeMille with his designs for the ornaments on the Greek costume in the 1932
play, The Warrior's Husband, Rodgers moved to Hollywood. Under contract
to DeMille, Rodgers worked on movies including Cleopatra and The
Adventures of Marco Polo. During the 1930s, Rodgers worked as a Hollywood studio
artist under many of the most well-known designers of the day on films
which included Man Chases Woman, Vogues of 1938, Prisoner of Zenda, Marie
Antoinette and The Barretts of Wimpole Street. In WWII Rodgers
served in the U.S. Army Transport Service as a Supply Auditor on board the S. S.
Lurline and the S. S. Mariposa.
Jerome Silverman, a native New Yorker, was born January 16, 1910. He attended the Staunton Military Academy
(VA) as a young man. Entering Harvard College at 16, Silverman went on to attend
Harvard Law School and was graduated in 1933. He then joined the law firm of
Levy, Kraus and Lehman in New York. Over the next five years many of Silverman's
clients in the fashion industry noted his interest and encouraged him to consider
switching careers. Silverman left the practice of law in 1938 and began working
for the clothing company, Martini Designed. Within two years he was a partial owner, serving
as the company's sales manager and its vice-president. During WWII Silverman
served in the military, rising to the position of sergeant major.
After the war, Silverman returned to Martini Designed. Silverman and Rodgers'
friendship began in 1946 when Silverman hired Rodgers to work for the company
as a designer. In 1959 Silverman and Rodgers formed their own company, Jerry
Silverman, Inc, with Rodgers acting as the principal designer. The company
created upscale ready-to-wear clothing for women, and the Jerry Silverman
line was sold at department stores and boutiques across the country. Over the
next two decades many well known women appeared in Jerry Silverman
dresses, including first ladies Patricia Nixon, "Lady Bird" Johnson
and Rosalyn Carter. The company's most successful slogan, "Just show me
the Jerry Silvermans, please" was heavily advertised in The New Yorker
and indicated that for many stylish American women, no other clothing line would
do. In 1972 Jerry Silverman, Inc. was acquired by Waranco, Inc., although
Silverman continued as an advisor.
Both men were strong supporters of the New York fashion design industry. Silverman
was the founder and first president of Fashion Capital of the World, an organization
of New York garment manufacturers set up to promote American ready-to-wear clothing.
He also served as a trustee to both the Parsons School of Design
and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Both men were life-long contributors
to many religious and social causes. Rodgers and Silverman owned adjoining New
York penthouse apartments, and Buckhorn, a country house in upstate New York.
The two were known for their great hospitality. Summer trips to Paris to view
the couture collections coincided with Rodgers' August birthday and lavish parties
in England and France were often thrown.
In the early 1960s Rodgers began collecting historic costumes. In developing
his collections, Cora Ginsburg, an important antique costume and textile dealer,
mentored Rodgers. Eventually the collection would grow to be one of the most
important private costume collections in the United States. Rodgers and Silverman
decorated their own homes with fine examples of the decorative
arts both purchased and inherited from the Silverman family.
In the late 1970s, without heirs, Silverman and Rodgers began to consider the
disposition of their estates. Initially Rodgers intended to donate his collection
of historic costumes to the Newcomerstown Historical Society in his Ohio hometown.
However, Rodgers eventually reconsidered this decision. In 1979, Rachel Redinger,
a member of KSU's Chestnut Society and founder of Trumpet in the Land,
an outdoor historical drama in New Philadelphia, asked Rodgers to accept the
theater's Golden Rose Award. After viewing their collection and speaking with
Rodgers and Silverman more extensively, Redinger asked them if they would considered
donating their collections to a museum connected with a university.
Rodgers and Silverman proposed a fashion show at KSU, which would serve as
a premier for the fall Jerry Silverman collection and present many
historic costumes from Rodgers' collection. The 1979 show at KSU's Student Center
ballroom, organized through the Chestnut Society, was an overwhelming success.
KSU President Brage Golding was enthusiastic about the Rodgers-Silverman collection
and the educational opportunities it presented. Additional Rodgers-Silverman
fashion shows at KSU in the early 1980s continued to raise enthusiasm for bringing
the collection to the university. Through discussions between Silverman, Rodgers,
Golding and other KSU officials, it was proposed that the University renovate
Rockwell Hall in order to house a museum and a new school of fashion design and
merchandising. Rodgers and Silverman in turn would donate their collection of
costumes, decorative arts and books, valued at $5 million, to KSU, to be housed
in the museum. The gift was announced in May of 1981.
To raise funds for the Rockwell Hall renovation and the new school, KSU undertook
a $6 million fundraising campaign. Rodgers and Silverman were very involved
in the renovation of Rockwell Hall and the planning of the museum and school.
Silverman and Rodgers brought many celebrities to Kent, most notably the Prince
and Princess Michael of Kent (England), as part of KSU fashion-related events.
Silverman died on October 25, 1984 before the museum opened. However, Rodgers
continued his involvement in the project, serving as the museum's creative director,
curator and associate director at different times. The Kent State University
Museum officially opened on September 27, 1985. The renovation of Rockwell Hall
was complete in 1990, with the dedication of the remaining space to the Shannon Rodgers
and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.
Rodgers settled in Kent permanently and continued to work at the KSU Museum. He
died on January 9, 1996.
The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman Papers are housed in two locations
on the KSU campus, Special Collections and Archives in the main library and
the June F. Mohler Fashion Library (131 Rockwell Hall). The majority of the
collection is housed in Special Collections and Archives. However, part of the collection, including movie and theater stills, Shannon Rodgers' sketches and Jerry Silverman, Inc. seasonal lines, swatch and order books are housed in the June F. Mohler Fashion Library (131 Rockwell Hall) to allow convenient access for KSU design students.
Books from the collection have been catalogued in KentLINK.
