Scope and Content

This collection is comprised of recordings made by WKSU of the Kent State Folk Festivals as well as National Public Radio folk broadcasts. Other local folk acts are included as well. The recording are mostly on reels of analog tape. With the later recordings, beyond 1989, the medium changed to Digital Audio Tapes. The recordings date from the seventh KSU Folk Festival in 1974 to the twenty-ninth in 1996. The tapes were received by the archives from WKSU in the fall of 2000. The collections was augmented with programs and poster already held by the department.

Historical Note

The Kent State Folk Festivals began back in 1967. Although they had humble beginnings, the festivals have grown immensely and now experience sell-out crowds for evening performances. In addition to the evening concerts, the Kent State Folk Festival has offered a unique experience in the form of its traditional workshops, that are free to the thousands that attend each day. In this setting, people in attendance have the opportunity to meet some of the more popular performers more intimately. These workshops are one of the most popular part of the Kent State Folk Festival. Through them there exists a chance for questions and answers, sing along, play along, and an enriched understanding of different musical styles and culture. The workshops allow for a personal ownership of the event through the participant's proximity to the wide variety of performers and their styles.

Description of Series

Series I: Inventory, programs and misc.

The box preceeding the recordings contains programs from the various festivals, photocopies of the original recording containers as well as the contents. The box also contains three tape reels which are smaller than all the others. They are placed here because of the size difference.
