Abstract: This collection documents KSU's School of Journalism Short Course in News Photography through working files, correspondence, photographs and published materials. KSU's Short Course was held annually from 1938 to 1962 (with a suspension during WWII from 1942-1945) and provided both amateur and professional photographers with lectures, demonstrations and introductions to new technologies from leaders in the field of press photography.
History of the KSU Short Course in News Photography: Kent State University's Short Course in News Photography was one of the earliest professional workshops of its kind in the nation. Held under the auspices of the Department (later School) of Journalism, the Short Course brought together working professionals and students in the field of photojournalism for intensive educational sessions which included lectures, demonstrations and field trips. It also provided the opportunity for social and professional networking and was well known for intensive, but informal, late-night 'bull sessions." During its existence (1938-1962) the Short Course brought national prestige to KSU, and served as an important vehicle to educate those in the field of photojournalism.
The Short Course began through the efforts of the Journalism Department Head, William Taylor. Taylor recruited A. Clarence Smith with the express purpose of beginning a short course in news photography at KSU. Smith directed the program for several years with other journalism faculty serving as managers of the course in the following years including Dale Rooks, James Fosdick, Edward Cliney and Harold VanWinkle. Leadership was also provided by photojournalism professionals who led courses and served on the Short Course Advisory Council.
The three-to-five day courses centered around lectures and presentations by leaders in the field of photojournalism and other photographic fields. Other features were added and taken away from the course over the years. From 1938 to 1961 the Short Course sponsored a national photography contest, with cash and other prizes awarded and photographs exhibited during the course. Beginning in 1946 an annual Short Course Digest was published. Linda Taylor Yoder in her history of the Short Course noted, "Librarians from across the country requested copies of the Digest, and the University shipped it to interested newspaper editors and schools of journalism all over the United States." The Digest was published from 1948 to 1958. In 1947, KSU established a News Photography Hall of Fame. Each year, a news photographer was selected for induction, "whose work has been chosen as the most outstanding published news photograph of the year."
The Short Course secured for KSU's School of Journalism a position of leadership in the field of photojournalism and served as a model for other short courses that operated throughout the country during this period. The Short Course ran until 1962, when flagging attendance, scheduling issues and other problems led Professor Taylor to permanently suspend the course.
Scope and Content: This collection documents KSU's Short Course in News Photography, which operated from 1938-1962, through working files, correspondence, photographs and printed materials, including programs and Digests. It also includes a collection of reel-to-reel audio tapes [1957-1962] of speakers' presentations.
