Biographical and Historical Note
President Robert I. White's background was in the field of education. He
initially taught in elementary and secondary schools. He then became president
of a junior college and, later on, a professor at the University of Chicago. He
arrived at Kent State University in 1946 and assumed the position of Dean of the
College of Education. In 1958, White became the first Vice-President of
Academic Affairs.
Upon President
George A. Bowman's retirement
from the office of president, White became the sixth president of Kent
State University following a nine month search by a faculty-trustee committee.
He took the oath of office on October 25, 1963. His tenure as president spanned
eight years from 1963 until his retirement in 1971.
1963/64: The President's cabinet and the administrative council were
established to revise University policies. Funding for research increased
sixty-five percent during this period. Also, the first three doctorates at Kent
State University were conferred by White.
1964/65: In conjuction with the Board of Regents, Kent State was selected to
be a major research university for Northeast Ohio. The University Press was
created. The Center for Urban Regionalism and the Liquid Crystals Institute
were also established.
1965/66: The Honors College evolved from the Honors program. Nearly six
hundred post-baccalaureate degrees were conferred, exceeding the total number
awarded during the first fifteen years of the Graduate School's existence. The
number of faculty increased by one hundred to a total of five hundred ninety.
Additionally, the Education building was opened.
1966/67: The University agreed to affiliate with the Blossom Music Center
for cultural education. Taylor Hall was dedicated, and the School of Nursing
was promulgated.
1967/68: Many new buildings were opened including Williams Hall and the
Language and Literature Building (Satterfield), and a new student conduct code
was put into place.
1968/69: The position of Vice President for Student Affairs was created. At
this time, the university community witnessed the first instances of student
unrest which, ultimately, resulted in the revocation of the charter of the Students
for a Democratic Society (SDS) . Suspensions and arrests for acts of
violence were on the rise. The Human Relations Center was founded with a
mission to promote a climate of understanding among members of the KSU
community.
1969/70: On May 4 1970 , four students were killed and nine wounded by a group of Ohio
National Guardsmen who were summoned to the campus on the order of Governor
James Rhodes. Subsequently, White requested of President Nixon the
appointment a high level commission to investigate the events which transpired. White oversaw the formation of the University Commission to Implement a
Committment to Non-violence (commonly referred to as the Kegley Commission )
and the Commission on KSU Violence. He was also involved in the deliberations
of numerous other committees and commissions. The majority of the material related to May 4 has been removed and put into a separate collection "Administrative Offices, Papers, 1970-74" May 4 Collection -- Box 127, 127a and 127b .
1970/71: Many new facilities which had been constructed the previous
year were now fully operational including the football stadium, the library, and
the university center. White retired from the university presidency in
August 1971 and was succeeded by Glenn Olds .
At the time of White's departure, enrollment at the University was over 21,000,
including 1000 graduate students. Campus boundaries expanded to over 800 acres,
and the number of buildings rose to 80. His tenure as president witnessed some
of the most important and influential years of Kent State University. He died
in 1990 at the age of 81.
Scope and Content
The contents of this collection span Robert White's term as University
President. It is partially comprised of personal interoffice correspondence and administrative policies. University bulletins, data on fundraising, and administrative council proceedings are also included. Correspondence from the assistant to the president and research assistant are indexed. A variety of information on academic affairs, including correspondence from the university
schools such as the College of Business and the Department of Health and Physical Education, is documented in this collection. There are also materials from the Center for Urban Regionalism and from the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.
Minutes and proceedings from various commissions, committees, and
organizations comprise another part of the collection. Such bodies include the Board of Trustees, the Campus Physical and Natural Environment Commission, the Campus Security Task Force, the Long Range Planning Commission, the Inter-University Council, and Faculty Senate.
A wide variety of reports are included: parking and traffic, finance,
university relations, and university research. There are also books and
pamphlets covering such topics as university rankings, local industry, taxation,
and the cost of education.
